Prize giving policy

Undergraduate coursework prizes

Unit winners

  • Are determined at the end of each semester’s results release (and confirmed after the Supplementary and Deferred examinations Board of Examiners).
  • The unit winner is the student who receives the highest mark in the unit. In event of a tie, there may be multiple winners.
  • Awards for unit winners are for undergraduate units owned by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Students who sit deferred examinations may be eligible as a unit winner as their final results can be a maximum of 100 HD.

Year level winners

  • Are determined at the end of each year and compiled from the data from the undergraduate Board of Examiners reports (and confirmed after Deferred examinations Board of Examiners).
  • The year level winner is the student who receives the highest average mark across the units studied at that year level and course in the calendar year. In event of a tie, there may be multiple winners.
  • Data are compiled using the honours calculation system. Please refer to information on the honours calculations.
  • To be eligible for the year level prize students must be enrolled in a full-time load for the relevant undergraduate year and year level, unless the student has been awarded exemption from previous study. In this case, the student must be enrolled in a minimum of 36 credit points to be eligible.
  • Elective units will be excluded from the calculation.
  • Those who have failed a unit in the relevant year and year level will not be eligible.

Course specific information – Year level winners

  • For the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science there will only be one year level winner at second and third year, despite there being two majors.  The major units at second and third year will be scaled and the year level prize given to the student with the highest corrected aggregate score. The corrected aggregate score is the sum of unit scores divided by the average score for the unit. This is to account for any variability in marking across the majors.
  • Students enrolled in Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science/Bachelor of Engineering will be eligible for the first and second year level awards only. These students enrol in their third year at Parkville with seven second year units and one third year unit. This will be calculated as above, all units will be weighted equally and the students will be competing for the second year level prize against single Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science students.
  • Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy/Bachelor of Commerce are assessed along with the Bachelor of Pharmacy students.

Gold medal winners

  • Are determined at the end of the student’s final year in their course and compiled from the data from the undergraduate Board of Examiners reports (and confirmed after the Deferred examinations Board of Examiners).
  • Students must have completed full course requirements of an undergraduate course managed by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in the year prior to the prize giving ceremony to be eligible for the award.
  • The Gold medal winner is the student who receives the highest average mark across all units in their course of study. In event of a tie, there may be multiple winners.
  • Data are compiled using the honours calculation system. Please refer to information on the honours calculations.

Probability of winners

  • Students who are multiple unit winners are often the year level winners.
  • Students who win multiple units and/or one or more year levels often are often the gold medal winners.
  • A student may be a recipient of multiple prizes.
