Academic and administrative complaints and grievances

A complaint about an aspect of courses, units, assessment or other academic matters should first be discussed with the member of the academic staff concerned. For example, an appeal against an assessment result should be made in the first instance to the lecturer who assessed the student. If this is not possible, or the matter not resolved satisfactorily, then the student should discuss the problem confidentially with the course director.  Students are also advised to discuss potential grievances with a university counsellor or student rights officer. A belief that an assessment is in error does not in itself constitute a grievance, and a complainant would have to demonstrate a failure of assessment policy or procedure.

Where the matter is not resolved, a request for resolution may be made in writing by the student or staff member to the associate dean (teaching and learning). As the senior academic staff member appointed by the dean, the relevant associate dean may then attempt to resolve the grievance through further negotiation or mediation, or may advise the complainant in writing that the grievance is considered to be lacking in substance or frivolous and/or vexatious, and that no inquiry will be made. If the grievance has not been resolved or the complaint dismissed, the associate dean will then convene a faculty grievance committee to hear the grievance and make recommendations.
