Unit pre-requisite and course progression rules

• All students can complete a FULL YEAR of candidature in any of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year, regardless of their Semester 1 results in the Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce and Bachelor of Formulation Science degrees.
• Please refer to Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry rules if you are enrolled in this degree.
• Pre requisite units for 2nd year include all 1st year units, (or the equivalent of) enabling part time enrolment for those students with approved special circumstances, and approved direct entry candidates into second year.*
• *In 2005 the faculty of Pharmacy (Management Committee) approved a provisional arrangement for students in first year (2004) at the faculty of Pharmacy (of the Bachelor of  Pharmacy, Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce and the Bachelor of Formulation Science degrees)  who FAILED 1st year mathematics VCP1091 or VCF1091. These students were granted permission to continue into second year and ‘overload’ their 2nd year enrolment in 2005, (repeating mathematics) provided they signed a disclaimer indicating their understanding of the course rules. This course rule was not instigated in 2006.
• All 2nd year units are pre-requisites for 3rd year units
  At the discretion of the Board of Examiners occasional cases of 'carrying' a 2nd year unit into 3rd year may occur - this situation is subject to extensive review of the candidates' results, a mid semester review in the ensuing semester and the students' potential to succeed.
• All 3rd year units are pre-requisites for 4th year units.
  

Repeating a unit or year level

All students who fail a unit are required to repeat the unit, before progressing into subsequent years of the course.  A student may CHOOSE to repeat (and incur fee and load) any units.

If a student is repeating units in a specific year level, they will be encouraged to audit any other units within the same year level (by attending lectures) and keep in touch with content, during their repeat year, for any units they have previously passed.

A student must complete their candidature within (6) years for B. Pharmacy, (enables two repeat years- at different year levels, (4.5) years for B. Formulation Science and B. Medicinal Chemistry (enables 1.5 repeat years - at different year levels. )

Results marks and grades legend

It is the student's responsibility to complete ALL compulsory assessment items and 'hurdle' requirements for each unit, prior to the end-of-semester examinations. Failure to do so will result in penalties - to be advised to the student - prior to the scheduled examination for that unit.

Supplementary examinations

At the Board of Examiners meeting, a supplementary assessment (NS) may be awarded for candidates who obtain between 40 – 49, for their unit (numerical) result. 

Unit results that fall below 40 will normally be deemed a FAIL (N) at the Board of Examiners meeting,  and at the discretion of the Board of Examiners, this would usually require the student to repeat the unit, (sit a supplementary assessment in approved exceptional cases) or alternatively, be referred to the Academic Progress Committee for review.

Supplementary assessments will be awarded, not exceeding the total value of 18 credit points per student per YEAR of candidature.

Supplementary assessments important dates:

All supplementary assessments for semester one units are to be concluded by the end of the August (Week 5) supplementary examination period.

All supplementary assessments for semester two units are to be concluded by the end of the January supplementary examinations period. Final year students will be scheduled to sit their supplementary assessments for semester two units during the January period, despite impending pre-registration commitments.

At the discretion of the unit coordinator, the style of supplementary assessment may include (for example: a supplementary written paper, additional assignment work, on-line assesment, oral examination or other practical work) to be completed either prior or during the scheduled supplementary examinations week. Students will be individually notifed of this by faculty Administration within seven days of results release.

Near passes

At the discretion of the Board of Examiners, a student within the Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce, Bachelor of Formulation Science may be awarded only (1) near pass (NP) for a unit final result between 45 – 49 within each semester of candidature. The allocation of a near pass NP is subject to an overall review of the candidates' entire unit results across the semester.

Viewing examination papers

• Freedom of information requirements allows students to view their marked examination scripts if they request to do so.
• Please be aware that access can be denied, to their script, if the examination is a short answer or multiple choice format that the examiner may use again.
• Examination script books are routinely destroyed six months after publication of results.
• Students may approach unit coordinators for feedback on their performance in examinations and to view their scripts.  Please discuss any results queries, in the first instance, with the Unit Coordinator before proceeding to the Pharmacy faculty Office. Preference for appointment times is given to students who have failed their examination papers.
