Mentor program

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences mentor program will assist you as a new first year student with the transition to university. The program commences in Orientation week when you will be placed in a small group with other first year students. Your group will be led by a mentor, who is a later-year student in the faculty. Your mentor will be your guide throughout Orientation week and your first semester of university. They will be there to answer your questions, get you involved and show you how the faculty and university life works.

What is a mentor and how will they help me?

noun: 1. an experienced and trusted adviser; 2. an experienced person in an organization or institution who trains and counsels new employees or students.

Your mentor will help you to get settled, become connected, and ensure you are equipped to tackle university life.  Mentors can share their experiences and offer advice on:

  • how to adapt to university life
  • the workload and study requirements
  • relevant textbooks
  • study techniques
  • examination structures

Mentors can also direct you to student services to help make your transition to university a successful one.

How do I get a mentor?

The faculty will assign you a mentor group and you will meet them on the first day of Orientation. At this first meeting you will come up with a creative mentor group name.

How often will I meet with my mentor group?

During Orientation week you will meet with your mentor group four times. At these meetings you will get to know your group, take a campus tour, discuss how university seems different to school, and get a hands-on tour of the various online learning support tools. See your personal eOrientation Planner for details.

There will also be five scheduled meetings during semester one. These will be a chance to explore particular transition issues, as well as discuss how things are going. You will also be set a team task to complete at each of the meetings. You can also meet up with members of your mentor group and attend the First year drop-in study centre.
