Progress reporting

PhD / Master of Pharmaceutical Science candidates

A new system for review of academic progress for research candidates has been introduced by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) for PhD and Masters candidates who commenced their research program in 2010.  However, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are implementing this for all students regardless of start date.

Regular and sound review of progress along a candidates' journey helps keep students on track and focused. Input from colleagues at critical stages throughout candidature provides students with an opportunity to receive useful feedback on their progress and research direction. This will compliment the compulsory confirmation process which occurs at the 12 month mark.

  • Annual questionnaire: All doctoral and masters candidates must complete the online Annual Questionnaire as part of an ongoing candidature review process
  • Confirmation of candidature: All doctoral and masters probationary candidates are required to present their work in progress to a student review panel and submit a confirmation of candidature report at the end of their probationary period (12 months)
  • Mid-candidature review: MRGS requires all students who commenced after 1January 2010 to meet this new milestone requirement.  However, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are implementing this for all students regardless of start date.  An oral presentation and written submission including project timeline is required to be given to a review panel at between 21-27 months of effective full-time candidature
  • Pre-submission seminar: MRGS requires all students who commenced after 1January 2010 to meet this new milestone requirement.  However, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are implementing this for all students regardless of start date.  An oral presentation and thesis summary is required to be given no more than 6 months prior to final submission.

1. Annual questionnaire

In previous years Higher Degree Research candidates were required to submit an annual progress report by July each year. From 2010 onwards, the annual progress report will be replaced with an annual questionnaire which must be completed during the re-enrolment period from 10 October to 21 November 2011. The questionnaire provides opportunity for a candidate and their main supervisor to:

  • review and report on the means by which the candidate meets the conditions of their candidature;
  • to identify and address any issues that may be affecting the candidature. The questionnaire will be on-line and not a manual form. Candidates will be required to complete the questionnaire before they can re-enrol for 2012;
  • When candidates log on to the WES system to re-enrol, they will be prompted to complete the annual questionnaire;
  • Once completed, they will then be prompted to return to the WES system and complete re-enrolment;
  • For more information on the annual questionnaire please visit the MRGS website.

2. Confirmation of candidature

Candidates and their supervisors should be aware of the MRGS requirements for confirmation of candidature, and upgrade from masters to PhD candidature.

Guidelines and procedures on confirmation of candidature visit MRGS website.

3. Mid-candidature review

The mid candidature presentation and review must take place for students between 21 and 27 months of full-time equivalent candidature following commencement of candidature.  The report of the HDR mid-candidature review outlines the faculty requirements for this important and compulsory milestone.  Visit the research students policy website to download forms.  This applies to all students at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

For more information on mid candidature review visit MRGS website.

4. Pre-submission seminar

This new milestone applies to those students who commenced from 1 January 2010 and is undertaken within 6 months prior to expected thesis submission. However, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are implementing this for all students regardless of start date. The report of HDR pre-submission review outlines the faculty requirements for this important and compulsory milestone.  Visit the research students policy page website to download forms.

Candidates are required to present a public seminar to a critical audience which includes a designate review panel. The seminar should:

  • provide a summary of their thesis structure and findings; and
  • describe, in greater detail, at least one element of their research.
