Alcohol at student functions

Liquor licences

A liquor licence is required for all events on campus where alcohol is served.  A copy of the liquor licence must be provided to the Student Activities Officer one week prior to the event. The original Licence must be given to security at the commencement of your event.  If you are unable to produce a liquor licence your event may proceed, but without alcohol.

Please be aware that the health and safety of people at your event is the Licensee's responsibility. It is important that you investigate and undertake your responsibilities as a licensee, including but not limited to:

  • ensuring bar staff are trained in the responsible service of alcohol,
  • non-alcoholic beverages and food must be available at all events where alcohol is being served,
  • the licence must be displayed at the event,
  • you must not supply alcohol to minors,
  • your responsibility to store alcohol in a secure place before, during and immediately after the event

A temporary limited licence may be granted to cover a variety of temporary events including one-off events such as balls or presentation evenings. The temporary limited licence has the following limitations;

  • a person or organisation may apply for temporary licences to cover a maximum of six one-off events at a venue over a 12-month period;
  • a maximum of three events will be accepted per application;
  • where an application is made for a series of events over a limited season, the season must extend for no longer than three months;
  • an applicant must have the right to occupy the premises during the event or season nominated.

These details where correct at the time of publishing - please use them only as a starting point, and be sure to check for changes or updates with Consumer Affairs Victoria.

If your requirements for a liquor licence exceed the above, you may be required to apply for a permanent licence.

Applications for limited licences should be lodged at least 35 days before the event commences. In some cases, you may be required to provide further information or a floor plan of the premises, or to display a notice of the application to the public.

For more information on the temporary limited licence please read the application form . A liquor licence can be obtained on-line from Consumer Affairs Victoria. Or for more information contact Consumer Affairs Victoria on (03) 9655 6696.

Security

All student events involving alcohol will require additional security. Guards will be charged to the clubs at an hourly rate.

Cold storage of alcohol

Cold storage for drinks is the responsibility of the organising committee.  Please request ice tubs from the MPSA and BYO ice.  The cafeteria fridges are not available for student functions.
