Pharmacology and Physiology
Pharmacology is a well-established discipline which, in summary, investigates the mechanisms of action of drugs at the cellular, tissue and in vivo level. An understanding of physiology is integral to pharmacological research and leads to identification of new targets for drug action prior to the synthesis of any new chemical entities. The faculty has specific interests in the pharmacology of drugs which act in the gastrointestinal tract, the central nervous system and the prostate. Specifically there are active research programs related to irritable bowel syndrome, drug addiction, psychosis, obesity, and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
