Higher degrees by research programs

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers research programs in areas involved with the design, development, evaluation and testing of new drugs and drug formulations. Research programs are also available in formulation science. Research students are supervised by members of staff who are leading international experts in the field.

Research conducted at the faculty and our research graduates are highly regarded within Australia and internationally. The faculty has established a solid reputation with industry in contract-based research, both nationally and internationally, and acts as a resource for industry and research institutes involved in the pharmaceutical and medical sciences.

Scholarships are available to our students.

International students will also need to obtain Overseas Health Insurance Cover

Research based programs available at the faculty

  • Master of Pharmaceutical Science – You will need to have qualified for a Bachelors degree in pharmacy or other relevant field with Honours level of H1 or HIIA or equivalent from Monash University or other recognised tertiary institution. Masters by Research students may take up to two years to complete on a full-time basis (up to four years part-time). The application form (pdf 56kb)  must be submitted directly to the faculty.
  • PhD – You will need to have qualified for a research masters degree with a significant research component in the relevant field, or a Bachelors degree in the relevant field with Honours level of H1 or HIIA or equivalent from Monash University or other recognised tertiary institution. PhD students may take up to four years to complete on a full-time basis (up to eight years part time).

Prospective research students are encouraged to consider the research undertaken at the faculty within Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) and Centre for Medicine Use and Safety (CMUS). Students should identify a research area in which they wish to pursue their studies, contingent upon supervision and project availability.

Applications for candidature can be considered by the faculty at any time during the year, however the on-line application for centrally allocated scholarships close on 31 October each year.

The faculty also conducts an honours research program which has a substantial research component and also serves as an excellent preparation for further research programs in either the Master of Pharmaceutical Science or PhD.

Fees for research courses at the faculty

If you are an Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen, your tuition fees will generally be funded by the Research Training Scheme (RTS). The RTS is a government scheme which funds tuition fees for Master of Pharmaceutical Science students for two years (four years part time) and four years for PhD students (eight years part time).
