Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce

Pharmacists are medicine experts. They are actively involved in patient care, either in hospitals or in the community and work to ensure that patient treatment therapies are optimised.

Pharmacists are health professionals and are part of a healthcare team. They inform and educate patients so that medication is used in a safe and effective way.

If you are interested in science and healthcare and you enjoy communicating with people then the Bachelor of Pharmacy could be for you.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy integrates four study streams: an enabling knowledge base, drug delivery, integrated therapeutics and pharmacy practice.

As a Monash pharmacy student you also will complete a Professional Experience Placement (PEP), working in community and hospital pharmacies for a total of 12 weeks. The PEP program gives you the chance to develop your skills in clinical pharmacy, problem solving, medication history taking, patient counselling and therapeutic planning. It also helps you gain an appreciation of the role of pharmacists in healthcare teams.

Placements occur in third and fourth year and all students complete at least one placement in a rural area. You can also apply to complete an international placement in countries such as the USA, UK and Singapore.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce is suited to students who are interested in adding business skills to their pharmacy degree. This double degree gives you an opportunity to gain valuable business skills and has a broad scope that many employers find attractive.

Learn more about entry criteria to the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce. The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Parkville campus) and Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce are accredited by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria.

Once you complete the Bachelor of Pharmacy you may qualify for the in-course honours award. Please refer to the award information for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (with honours) for more details.

After graduating from the Bachelor of Pharmacy and to become a practising pharmacist, you are required to undertake a year of supervised training, followed by a registration examination. This is a requirement of the Pharmacy Board of Victoria.

During your supervised training year, you will also need to complete an approved internship course. Monash University offers an approved internship course that can lead to a postgraduate qualification, the Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice.
