The Cyril Tonkin scholarship fund

Introduction

Dr Cyril Tonkin was a pharmacist who graduated as a gold medallist from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1910 before becoming a medical practitioner in 1921. He lectured at the Victorian College of Pharmacy between 1920 and 1945 and was retained as an examiner until 1953.

The Cyril Tonkin Scholarship was founded in 1975 at the Victorian College of Pharmacy, then administered by the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, by the estate of Miss Sarah Amy Lloyd.  The Society transferred trusteeship of the scholarship fund to the Victorian College of Pharmacy Foundation, Monash University in 2010.

The purpose of the fund is to support recipients to undertake further studies or investigations in pharmaceutical pursuits.

The founder's express wish was also that the selfless service Dr Tonkin rendered to his fellows in his lifetime should inspire recipients, so that in their turn they will strive to uphold the highest professional standards in their services to humanity.

Administration of the fund

The Victorian College of Pharmacy Foundation administers the fund, with guidance from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The fund supports the following:

The Cyril Tonkin fellowship

The Cyril Tonkin fellowship is provided to support recipients to undertake a significant study or investigation of a pharmacy academic or practice project. Fellowship grants will be available from time to time only.

The Cyril Tonkin scholarship and the Cyril Tonkin fellowship were last awarded in 2010.
