125 stories for 125 yearsAlistair Lloyd
Alistair Lloyd graduated from the college in 1956 and served on the various managing bodies of the Victorian College of Pharmacy from 1962 to 1998. In 1957 he received a Kodak Scholarship which allowed him to travel for twelve months, during which Alistair studied the role of pharmacy in major disasters, such as nuclear war, visiting England, Scandinavia, Northern Europe and North America. After finishing his studies, Alistair became a partner in a pharmacy in Geelong where he worked for over twenty years. In 1961 he became a member of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria (PSV), a body which was responsible for running the College in the 1960’s. Alistair served on the Council for 18 years also serving as president and Branch Director. He was involved in the Pharmaceutical Association of Australia and New Zealand where he again served as president. In 1982 Alistair was appointed Registrar of the Pharmacy Board of Victoria and in 1996 he won Pharmacist of the Year. As the Executive Officer of the college, Alistair served on the board of the college until 1998, maintaining liaison between the college and other organisations. In 1998, together with Neil Naismith and John Ware, and with the approval and assistance of the Dean, Colin Chapman, Alistair set up the Victorian College of Pharmacy Foundation, which he has chaired since its inception. The Foundation was established to help the college achieve its aim of becoming internationally recognised as one of the best schools of Pharmacy in the world. The Foundation ensures all funds donated by alumni, the profession, the pharmaceutical industry and other partners, are well managed and applied to appropriate and intended projects. The Foundation has assisted the college to maintain state of the art teaching and research facilities and has increased public awareness of the valuable contribution of pharmacy to the community. During Alistair’s long standing involvement with the college he has seen the growth of the college in all areas, including both research and teaching. He has witnessed the increase in professionalism of students and graduates as the study of pharmacy has grown dramatically from an apprenticeship course into today’s prestigious four year degree. |
